This is and has always been a hard coded thing inside the mind of a typical Brit. Its more noticeable amongst outsiders. Brits will walk on the street and not smile at you, nor a friendly hello. And even if you dare to, expect the brick wall treatment of complete silence and utter shock. Some outsiders may see it as rude, but its not...its just the way of the typical Brit.
This is most noticeable on the London Underground (Train system for London). Wether the trains are crowded or empty its just Pure silence, with just the noise of the trains and turning of newspapers. For those who are from countries that inhabit friendly people and an open talking nature, this is almost torture. General things such as hello, good morning, how are you today, simply do not exist.
Im not sure if there will ever be a resolution to this cultural trend that has formed in the country. But hey, maybe Brits like it this way.
